Choosing a fishing kayak
There’s loads of fun in going out kayak fishing; from the experience of being outdoors in the middle of open water to the excitement of making a good catch worth your while. Fishing is truly a great experience but you can only enjoy it if you have the right equipment. It begins with having the right kayak.
One of the most important factors to consider in choosing a fishing kayak is where the activity will take place. Depending on your location you may need to paddle far and therefore speed becomes an important factor. In that case, you will need a long-length kayak as it is faster. It is also easier to control so as not to paddle off-course.
If you are the water-phobia kind of person then you will benefit from a sit-in type of kayak where your legs get into the kayak’s body and you stay dry while fishing. This model also gives you more stability because of a lower centre of gravity. Sit-in kayaks are actually designed more for fishing than for, say, tourist purposes.
A third factor to consider is the width of the vessel. A wider kayak is generally considered to be more stable than a narrow one, so if you are new to the fishing arena and need to build your confidence, choose one with a greater width. On that note, you may also want to go for a pre-rigged kayak which has all the accessories fitted in.
Finally, always ask the experts for advice. In any given field, including kayak fishing, experts who have done it before are better off in providing good advice than anyone else.
